On behalf of the Maritime School in Darłowo (Poland), the official owner and operator of the vessel, and the Alumni Association of the Maritime School, I am writing to share an extraordinary chapter of your company’s technical heritage.
My name is Zenon Staszak. I am a Marine Chief Engineer with 39 years of experience at sea—a journey I began as an engine room apprentice. I am also an alumnus and currently the Vice-President of the Alumni Association of the Maritime School in Darłowo.
Since 1965, our school has operated the m/v „Franek”, a Type B11 lugger-trawler built in 1953. The heart of this vessel is an engine manufactured in Magdeburg in 1950: a Buckau R. Wolf, Type R8DV, Serial Number 9236.
This machine holds a unique place in maritime history:
- Exceptional Longevity: The engine has been in active service for 76 years and remains fully operational.
- Educational Legacy: Since 1965, the m/v „Franek” has served as the primary training tool for thousands of aspiring marine engineers. Many of today’s Chief Engineers—including myself—learned their craft on this very machine.
- Future as a Museum: The vessel is scheduled to perform its final sea voyages in June 2026. Following these trips, starting from July 2026, according to classification society requirements, the ship will be prepared to be permanently moored in the Port of Darłowo as a stationary museum ship.
It would be a great honor for the Maritime School in Darłowo to host representatives of the manufacturer on board m/v „Franek” during these historic final voyages in June 2026. We believe this is a unique, last opportunity to witness the R8DV engine in operation at sea—a true testament to the „Made in Magdeburg” legacy.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
im Namen der Seefahrtsschule in Darłowo (Polen), dem offiziellen Eigner und Betreiber des Schiffes, sowie des Absolventenverbandes der Seefahrtsschule, möchte ich Sie über ein außergewöhnliches Kapitel Ihrer Unternehmensgeschichte informieren.
Mein Name ist Zenon Staszak. Ich bin Leitender Maschineningenieur (Chief Engineer) mit 39 Jahren Erfahrung auf See – eine Laufbahn, die ich als Maschinenpraktikant begann. Zudem bin ich Absolvent und derzeit Vizepräsident des Absolventenverbandes der Seefahrtsschule in Darłowo.
Unsere Schule betreibt seit 1965 die m/v „Franek”, einen im Jahr 1953 gebauten Lugrotrawler vom Typ B11. Das Herzstück dieses Schiffes ist ein im Jahr 1950 in Magdeburg gefertigter Buckau R. Wolf Motor, Typ R8DV, Seriennummer 9236.
Dieses Triebwerk nimmt einen einzigartigen Platz in der Schifffahrtsgeschichte ein:
- Langlebigkeit: Der Motor ist seit 76 Jahren im aktiven Dienst und bis heute voll funktionstüchtig.
- Bildungserbe: Seit 1965 diente die m/v „Franek” als primäres Lehrmittel für mehrere tausend angehende Schiffsmechaniker. Viele der heutigen Chief Engineers – mich eingeschlossen – haben ihr Handwerk an genau dieser Maschine gelernt.
- Zukunft als Museum: Das Schiff wird im Juni 2026 seine letzten Seereisen absolvieren. Ab Juli 2026 wird die Einheit gemäß den Klassifizierungsvorschriften dauerhaft im Hafen von Darłowo als stationäres Museumsschiff verbleiben.
Es wäre der Seefahrtsschule Darłowo eine große Ehre, Vertreter des Herstellers während dieser historischen Abschiedsfahrten im Juni 2026 an Bord der m/v „Franek” begrüßen zu dürfen. Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass dies eine einmalige Gelegenheit ist, den R8DV-Motor im Betrieb auf See zu erleben – ein wahres Zeugnis für das Erbe „Made in Magdeburg”.
